Photographing an engagement session at Villa Monastero in Varenna means working in one of the most versatile and elegant settings on Lake Como. From a photographer’s perspective, this villa offers a perfect balance of architecture, gardens, and lake views, all framed by light that shifts beautifully throughout the day.
On this session, the light was diffused and soft – an overcast sky that acted as a natural filter. This type of light is ideal for portraiture: it eliminates harsh shadows, smooths skin tones, and allows me to focus entirely on the couple’s emotions. Every image carried a luminous, airy quality, with colors that appeared balanced and refined.
The gardens of Villa Monastero create a natural frame for storytelling. Leading lines from the pathways guide the viewer’s eye, while the tall cypress trees add vertical depth to the compositions. I positioned the couple along the stone balustrades and near the fountains, where the geometry of the architecture contrasts with the organic softness of the greenery. These visual layers create images that feel structured yet natural.
Color is another defining element. The muted greens of the gardens, the soft beige tones of the stone, and the silvery-blue reflections of the lake all form a harmonious palette. When combined with the couple’s neutral outfits – creams, whites, and taupe – the entire gallery feels cohesive. From a photographic standpoint, this harmony of tones is what gives the session its timeless and elegant character.
In the arcaded corridors, I used the natural lines of the arches to frame the couple. Arches and columns are perfect compositional tools: they create balance, add depth, and draw attention toward the center of the frame where the emotion happens. Here, I captured intimate gestures – a glance, a gentle kiss – that felt amplified by the architectural backdrop.
The lakefront offered a completely different mood. Wide shots allowed me to include the expanse of the water and mountains, emphasizing scale and serenity. Close-ups, on the other hand, focused on the couple’s connection, with the shimmering water rendered into a soft, blurred background. Playing with depth of field was key here, transforming Lake Como’s textures into a painterly backdrop.
For me, photographing engagements at Villa Monastero is about blending technical precision with artistic sensibility. Light, lines, and colors come together with emotion, creating images that feel authentic and timeless. This location offers endless opportunities for creative storytelling, making it one of the most inspiring spots on Lake Como for engagement photography.
